While I write to entertain,
I also write to inspire.
about
CLARENCE HOLMES, Jr
I am a native New Orleanian who has lived in Houston, TX since Hurricane Katrina. I will admit that while I was ardently teaching composition and literature at the university level in New Orleans and Baton Rouge, I actually wanted to be writing for the stage and screen. Now I am doing just that. Given the recognition my projects are receiving (Best Short Drama, New York City Play Reading Festival; Best Short Screenplay, New York Screenwriters Competition, for instance), I wish even more I’d started writing a long time ago. But better late than never. While my primary goal is to write dramatic stories that show audiences (African American youth, especially) how minority members in past generations have fought to achieve personhood (the bridge in the title of my play “Bridge in the Distance” is Pettus Bridge and the theme is every vote counts), I also plan to write stories about minority members’ contemporary struggles—political and social. My ultimate goal is to write an updated version of Alex Haley’s “Roots”.
