Contemporarily, Tom, the protagonist in Uncle Tom’s Cabin (Harriet Beecher Stowe,1852), has mistakenly assumed the reputation of being a traitor to his fellow slaves. Many people who want to cast someone as a traitor to his/her people will say that person is an Uncle Tom. If one were to read Uncle Tom’s Cabin, however, one will realize at the start Tom was actually a savior of sorts to the slaves. What Tom does to free Cassy and Emmaline from the clutches of Simon Legree is the ultimate example of who Tom really was.

Set during the tumultous few days in New Orleans leading up to the Hurricane Katrina disaster of 2005, a police sergeant learns of his daughter’s kidnapping and goes on a desperate, high-stakes vigilante spree to find and rescue her—ultimately uncovering a much larger conspiracy and criminality that caused the infamous breaching of the Ninth Ward levees in the wake of the storm.
