Poll tax for sista blu
The setting is Selma, Alabama, a year after Bloody Sunday. Sista Blu—a server in a diner--is so absorbed in a book, she seems not to be mindful of her customers; Harris says she has something on her mind. And what is that? The sheriff election, maybe? Harris also says women know nothing about politics. Obviously, he’s wrong since Sista Blu crosses Pettus Bridge in torrential rain to get to the only “colored” precinct. The question is, does disenfranchisement work as it often does, or does Sista Blu’s effort to vote pay off?
Ghosts in the Garret
Contemporarily, Tom, the protagonist in Uncle Tom’s Cabin (Harriet Beecher Stowe, 1852), has mistakenly assumed the reputation of being a traitor to his fellow slaves. Many people who want to cast someone as a traitor to his/her people will say that person is an Uncle Tom. If one were to read Uncle Tom’s Cabin, however, one will realize at the start Tom was actually a savior of sorts to the slaves. Tom’s defense of Cassy and Emmaline in Ghosts in the Garret is an example of who Tom really was.
